If you’ve been to the brewery on a Thursday, you know who this post is about. Brian Cox has been a staple of the Great Flood experience for a couple years now, hosting our weekly trivia, brainstorming countless themed trivias, and even founding and captaining our original hockey team, the 10 Minutes Majors (who placed second in last year’s Louisville Puck Drop Tournament, by the way). So, in this month’s partner spotlight, we wanted to take some time to tell you a little about him and how we lucked across him joining our team. Think of this post like a VH1 Behind the Music episode, but with trivia instead of music.
Like a number of great stories, this one starts with hockey and beer. Unbeknownst to one another, Brian and Vince Cain, one of our owners, started in the LAHPA’s Never Ever Program during the same season. While the teams were out for post-game drinks, a few topics of conversation came up:
- Ray LaMontagne
- Brian being my wife’s spirit animal
- Vince needing a trivia host
That last one is a little more important than the rest, but the point is the same. The brewery had recently lost the services of the legendary Gus Bus Trivia, and, after a few questionable fill-ins, was looking for a long-term replacement. And, with a radio-worthy voice and a knack for knowing the finer details of just about everything, Brian was pretty much a natural fit. They agreed to give it a shot, and it’s pretty much been that way ever since.
If you haven’t been to a trivia night, Brian goes out of his way to make it as inclusive as possible. Every week contains a wealth of categories, so everyone’s sure to know something, and he even takes trivia requests and suggestions at firstname.lastname@example.org. This is complemented by a range of themed trivias from The Office to Star Wars and even Vince’s life (a specialty for Vince’s birthday), but, no matter the topic, the environment’s the same: welcoming, comical, and approachable to everyone from the first-time trivia-goer to the veteran team.
Outside of trivia, Brian’s a man of many talents. He’s a player, captain, and coach in the Louisville Adult Hockey Players Association; a golfer; a wedding officiant; and an avid traveller, having been to Europe twice and 37 of the 50 United States. He’s also ghostwritten a few satirical fiction pieces and is an avid movie watcher and reviewer.
So, whether you’re a trivia regular or someone who’s never been, we’d encourage you to swing by on a Thursday at 7:30, say hi to Brian and the rest of the crew, and enjoy some trivia and a fresh, local beer!
These are normally reserved for employee spotlights, but we went ahead and ran the lightning round questions by Brian to see how he’d respond. Curious to see what he thought? Check out the answers below!
What’s your favorite girl scout cookie?
If you were one Great Flood beer, which one would you be?
Maple Porter. I love syrup and am half elf. I was pretty much the inspiration for Buddy the Elf, at least in terms of my diet. Plus, I’m the only northerner here.
What’s your favorite breakfast food?
Waffles. Any day of the week. I need a place to put my syrup.
If you could have any musical artist write the soundtrack of your life, who would it be?
Dave Matthews. His lyrics fit well into my perspective on life and who I am.
What’s your favorite movie?
I have my top five: Dumb and Dumber, Elf, Grown Ups, Garden State, and Reign Over Me. If I had to pick from those five, it would probably be Elf or Garden State. It’s a toss up.
