When we set out to name our brewery, we had lots of ideas. From our last names to UofL and anything in between, we threw around pretty much every idea we could conjure. It wasn’t until we learned about the Great Flood of 1937, though, that one stuck. As tragic as it was, it brought our city together in ways previously unseen. Strangers became friends. Wreckage became rebirth. What could have ruined Louisville didn’t. To us, the Great Flood is a reminder of how kind, diverse, and resilient the people of Louisville are, which is why we set aside a week every January to celebrate it and remember this critical piece of our city’s history.
This Year’s Events
Flood Week 2017 will take place from Wednesday, January 25th, to Saturday, January 28th. We’ll have a few spins on our beers, a few more spins on some of our regular events, and, of course, a few special events for you to check out. Here’s the schedule:
- Wednesday, January 25th (Flood Liars Club Night): After the Great Flood, a group of volunteers started meeting regularly to stay in touch and share stories. Time went on and their stories became less and less accurate, and the group became known as the Flood Liars. We named our mug club after this group, and we’d be remiss if we didn’t celebrate them to kick off Flood Week 2017. So, to get the week started, our new Flood Liars Club members can pick up their new mugs.
- Thursday, January 26th (30’s Trivia): We can’t give Brian a break from trivia, so we’re going to put a spin on this week’s with a 1930s theme. From literature to history, sports to music, we’ll see who can come out on top and win a gift card from our friends over at Jet’s Pizza. Not a history buff? That’s okay! A handful of the questions will be multiple choice, so come on out and try your luck. To top it all off, we’ll be tapping our Find-A-Way IPA as well as two variants (pomegranate and blood orange).
- Friday, January 27th (’37 Night): Be ready to dance! We’ll be clearing out some space in the taproom to set up for swing dancing. While we’re at it, we’re encouraging folks to come out in their best 30s attire, and we’ll even have some Great Flood merch on hand to award to whoever shows up wearing the best outfit. Not your thing? We understand, so we’re also tapping seven variants of our ’37 Porter. We’ll have Old Imperial ’37 (barrel-aged), maple, coffee and maple, hazelnut, coconut, peanut butter, and chipotle pepper porters available. Come try ’em out!
- Saturday, January 28th (’37 Flood Photo Exhibit): Wayside Christian Mission‘s Wayside Expressions Gallery will be bringing their Great Flood photo exhibit to the taproom. Come see some photography from the Flood, including the iconic bread line photo in its original literary context from 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM. Director Randall Weber will be giving a presentation at 4:00 PM, and $1 from all house beers sold on Saturday will go directly to Wayside Christian Mission.
Whether this is your first Flood Week or your third with us, we hope to see you out. Cheers!
