It’s been a busy week at the new Shelby Park facility! On Tuesday, we finally received our brand new hot side, including a mash tun, boil kettle, heat exchanger, and platform (all courtesy of Bridgetown Brew Systems). The hot side of the brewery is where we will utilize three of the four brewing ingredients (water, malted barley, and hops) to create wort. Wort is a sugary, tea-like liquid carefully and specifically crafted to be fed to yeast in our fermenters. During fermentation, the yeast will feed on the sugars in the wort and produce alcohol and C02 (beer)! Don’t let anyone tell you differently—brewers make wort, but yeast makes beer. As we mentioned in our last update, these vessels are quite a bit bigger than our current equipment, meaning we’ll be able to make a lot more beer for you!
On that note, this equipment is actually a little bigger than a traditional 15 barrel system (we’ll brew twice in one day to fill a 30 barrel fermenter, if you’re curious). This will allow us to brew beers that require a larger grain bill, subsequently allowing us to brew some beers with a higher ABV (think Imperial Stouts and Belgian Quads). That being said, we’re looking forward to experimenting and adding to our repertoire of beers.
Another addition, which might be more exciting for us than for you, is this beauty:
There’s a lot of heavy stuff coming in, and it isn’t going to stop anytime soon, so it’ll certainly come in handy!
And, last but not least, we also got in our new keg washer. On a good day, we’re currently able to wash around six kegs an hour, but this will allow us to wash around 40 in that same amount of time.
Douglass Loop Taproom
Other than that, it’s business as usual over at Douglass Loop. We still have running groups going on every Monday and Tuesday, not to mention trivia (sponsored by our friends at Jet’s Pizza) with Knowledgemaster Brian Cox on Thursdays. We also have a tap takeover coming up with Southern Tier on August 26th. Make sure to come out and try a new beer or two!
